Results from March 2010 Tournament

Wow, March 2010 was a surprise!  I'll be honest, for a minute there I was wondering if we could pull it off with so many more than anticipated...but what a great worry to have.  In my humble opinion, I think it all went very well.  We were again able to split into two brackets, which hasn't happened for a year -- hopefully this is a continuing trend now.  Tier I was won by Peter with a score of 5.0 / 6.0.  Matt Gorman took second with 4.5, and Justin Rajsky finished in third from a group of players with 4.0 points.  Great job to everybody!!  Not to take anything away from the tier I players, but the real stories were from tier II.  First off, the only other time we've had a tier II, it was 6 players...this time 24!!!  Also, Jermaine McNeil remained undefeated (11-0) as he went 6-0 for the day to finish as the tournmanet champion.  (If anybody missed him in the paper, I found the NWI Times had him with some of his teammates on the cover--good job) Another first was the finish for second place.  Ian Westerhoff and Carlos Farela played a blitz game for the tie-break...when that game stalemated, they played another.  Ian finally ended up breaking the tie for second; both players were 5-1 for the day (not including the tie-breaks).  Thanks again to everybody who has come and brought friends -- I'm really excited about were this is going.  I'll recruit some more help next time, and we'll be ready for even more!  See you then, C

Free Chess Indiana -- March 2009

Our March tournament was our biggest yet.  Frankly, I was not prepared for the number of players who showed up, but everything still started on time, and went very smoothly.  We were able to separate into two tiers of play for the first time, which I would love to continue.  We welcomed back Emilio Ressurreccion, and he welcomed the opportunity to finish in first place.  At 5.5 out of 6, he was nearly perfect.  Gabriel Blakely gave him a great run though, and at 5.0 of 6 was a close second.  In fact, we had a lot of players close, as this was the toughest tournament yet.  Tier II was a great addition to the tournament, and we had a great race there too.  I was able to take a look at the last game between Jermaine McNeil and David Vogel (both 4-0-0 going into the game) I believe it was a rook and pawn vs. two knight and pawn endgame, which Jermaine was able to win.  Great job to everybody who played, and thanks again.  I'll see you next time, C

Results from September, 2008

Wow, September brought some tough competition!  Newcomer Stephen Jennings Led the pack with a perfect 6-0 day.  Gabriel Blakeley (another newcomer) was 5-1 to take second.  Third place was a battle between three of our top returning players.  Justin Rajsky, Brian Harrigan and Emilio Ressurreccion were all 4-2, with Emilio getting the nod in the tie-break.  Just about everybody present talked about who they were going to bring in December, so I'm expecting an even better tournament next time--Hopefully we'll finally start having two tiers...Thanks again to Everybody, and I'll see you next time, C.

Results from June '08
June is usually a pretty busy month for everybody, and that showed when it came time to count the number of players present at the tournament.  The players who were there, however, matched up perfectly for fantastic competition!  Emilio Ressurreccion was finally stopped after 25 straight wins!!  He finished at 4/1/1 for second place.  Josh Persons went 4/2/0 for third, and the big story was the champion, at 6-0...Justin Rajsky!!  It was no easy feat either...he came into the tournament rated sixth, then beat #5, #4, #3 and #1, plus the other two opponents he faced.  Justin gained 7.7 points in the ratings, which is the most ever gained in one tournament...Great job!  Nathaniel Sebenste went 3-3 to win the tier 2 prize, which is really impressive when you realize there was no tier 2--he was playing the tier 1 opponents.  We also had three players new to our tournament: Jake, Ted, and Dakota, all of whom did very well.  Also worth mentioning was Noah Sebenste who pulled off the second biggest upset of the day with his fourth round victory.  Well it was another great one, and we hope to see more of our players back for September.  Until then, keep 'em on the board, C.

March was great! We had to pull out extra tables at the last minute to accomodate more players than we expected--hopefully this is a trend, and we'll continue to grow so quickly. Thanks again to everbody who has been bringing friends, to encourage this, you may notice player of the year points being added to your total for it...Anyway, the results: Emilio Ressurrecction was unstoppable again, as he went 6/0/0 to become tournament champion. Bill Yapp was by himself at 5/0/0 for second place. Third place was somewhat disputed (one of the weaknessess of the swiss-system style tournament) but Matt Gorman ended up beating me in a blitz game for third place--good job. We had a lot of new players, and many new young players again. Something cool I noticed was that nobody in the tournament lost all their games--I guess we are filling out the competition well. Also, if we have so many players again next time (June 14th) -- or more-- we should be able to play two tiers of competion, that way, we'll all get as many good games as possible. Thanks again to everybody, and I'll see you next time, C
